O sítio arqueológico da Abicada contém vestígios de vilas romanas dos séculos I e IV, existe um importante cemitério do período Neolítico/Calcolítico em Alcalar e a arquitetura mourisca das capelas de São João e de São Pedro evoca os locais sagrados onde os Muçulmanos enterravam os seus ascetas religiosos – os marabus.
