Description of the parish:
'Fernão Ferro is the most recent parish of the municipality of Seixal, having been created on May 27, 1993.
According to a legend the parish originates from the name of Fernão Peres, brother of D. Paio Peres. Fernão Peres de Correia, master of the order of Santiago, founder of the village of paio Peres.
Ferdinand (Iron) Peres was known by the name of the Babilon, a nickname attributed to him, like all the other crusaders, who in the reign of Sancho II ventured into the lands of Babylon to defend the Tomb of Christ.
The crusader fell from grace during the war between Sancho II and his brother, Afonso II. Once installed here he was in charge of collecting tribute to all travelers who came or went to Sesimbra and used the path of Almada.
The nickname iron was attributed, possibly, due to the fact that he had the cross of Christ embedded in his crossbow armor and the hilt of his sword, which he always carried with him. Other possible explanation would be the fact that it screws animals, which combined with their corpulence and cruelty, would give rise to the designation.
The place of 'fernanan iron' has its first reference in a document that is in the tower of the Tombo and that says 'on January 10, 1501, the sesmeiros of the castle give Charter of sesmaria in favor of Braz Teixeira, knight of the house of El- Rei Nosso Senhor D. Manuel I. The lands where it is called that of a house ...'
This property will be given in a will to the friars Jerónimos de Belém by João Teixeira, son of the first owner, in 1547.
After the extinction of the religious orders in 1834 the palmela pine forests and the couple of Fernão Ferro, were sold to Gabriel Borges Marques Rocha who introduced the cultivation of tobacco. In the same year the property is acquired by Abraão Wheellhouse, who gives it to his daughter Georgina as a dowry of marriage to José Joaquim Almeida Lima, keeping the property in this family until recent times.
The settlement of the place began only in 1902 with families from various parts. The first family to settle Mirandas, Sacoutos, Padre Nosso, Gomes, Nogueiras, Tostão and many others.
The original thirty-three families cleared the thickets that covered the area and cultivated the land. Others worked for the Lima family in the cutting of pine woods, then taken to Lisbon, to be used in bread ovens.
In Fernão Ferro there were good vineyards that disappeared completely due to phylloxera.
The ex-libris of the parish the house of the shells, seems to have been the house in ruins referred to in the document of 1501 by the Warehouseman of Sesimbra. Just as then the house is now in a state of pitiful ruin.
The locality due to its geographical situation, with good access, good air and close to bathing areas, suffered, from the sixties, a process of clandestine allotment. In 1969 António Xavier de Lima begins the sale of part of his property, lots. In 1970 the owner built a church and parish center, inaugurated by the then Cardinal Cerejeira. It was in this same year that Fernão's newspaper was first published. '
