A partir do século VIII estabelecem-se nesta região os mouros, povo que viria a reconhecer por definitivo a importância estratégica desta povoação dando origem ao seu crescimento demográfico. De facto, foi durante a ocupação muçulmana que surgiram as primeiras fortificações uma no século IX e outra no século XII, devido ao crescimento da povoação em tamanho e em número de habitantes. Finalmente, a partir do século XIII, Elvas tornou-se parte integrante do reino português e adquiriu o seu estatuto de cidade-fortaleza por altura da Guerra da Restauração Portuguesa, de 1640 a 1668. Este estatuto devia-se ao facto de ser por aqui o caminho mais próximo para alcançar a capital portuguesa, Lisboa, e, por isso, havia a necessidade de o proteger.
