Segundo Manuel de Sousa Coutinho, na sua obra 'História de São Domingos', a sua fundação é anterior ao séc. XV, referindo o autor a existência de uma povoação chamada de 'Castanheira', distante de Pedrógão Grande (...) 'duas léguas bem puxadas, onde em 1449 apareceu a imagem de São Domingos' (...), padroeiro da freguesia de Castanheira de Pera. Castanheira de Pera tem uma área total de 66,86 Km2 , com uma população de cerca de 3739 habitantes (dados relativos a 2001) e é apenas composto por duas freguesias: Castanheira de Pera e Coentral. Situa-se nos planaltos da vertente sul da Serra da Lousã, a nordeste do Distrito de Leiria, confrontando com os Concelhos de Pedrógão Grande, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Lousã, Góis e integra a denominada Zona do Pinhal do Interior Norte. Pertence, igualmente, à Comarca de Figueiró dos Vinhos e à Diocese de Coimbra. Os locais e povoações espalham-se por toda a área do Concelho. Alguns já foram povoados, como Crispina e as Juntas, outros têm crescido de forma que a sua delimitação já não é precisa. Da freguesia de São Domingos fez parte a Alagoa (hoje freguesia de Santa Catarina - Vila Facaia - Pedrógão Grande), como atestam vários documentos, e Escalos Cimeiros, como se pode ver no documento da outorga da freguesia em 1502. As povoações que constituem o Concelho são: Abelheira, Além da Ribeira, Ameixoeira, Amial, Anchas, Balsa, Banda d'Além, Barreira, Bolo, Botelhas, Camelo, Cancelinho, Carregal Cimeiro, Carregal Fundeiro, Carriçal, Casalinho, Castanheira de Pera, Coentral das Barreiras, Coentral da Cruz, Coentral do Fojo, Coentral Grande, Conqueiro, Corga, Crispina, Dordio, Ervideira, Esconhais, Feteira, Fontão, Fontes, Foz, Gestosa Cimeira, Gestosa Fundeira, Juntas, Moita, Moredos, Nossa Senhora da Guia, Ortiga, Outeiro, Palheira, Pera, Pisões, Pisão do Baeta, Pisão da Teresa, Pisão do Vermelho, Rapos, Reinspinhal, Retorta, Santo António da Neve, Sapateira, Sarnadas, Sarzedas de São Pedro, Sarzedas do Vasco, Serrada da Palheira, Soeiro, Souto Escuro, Souto Fundeiro, Souto do Vale, Torgal, Torno, Troviscal, Vacalouras, Vale das Arrabiças, Vale das Figueiras, Vale do Moínho, Vale das Mós, Vale Feitoso, Várzea, Vermelho e Vilar. As principais povoações já existiam há muitos anos, mas no século XVII são referidos nos primeiros livros de registo de baptizados da freguesia. Morfologicamente, o Concelho caracteriza-se por uma acentuada desigualdade altimétrica. No Norte do concelho surgem altitudes superiores a 700 metros, sendo atingidos os valores mais elevados (1100 m - 1200 m) no limite do Concelho, onde se localiza a Serra da Lousã. Na parte Sul do Concelho, os valores de altitude atingidos são da ordem dos 400 a 700 m. O concelho de Castanheira de Pera encontra-se inserido na bacia hidrográfica do Rio Zêzere. O principal afluente deste rio é a Ribeira de Pera que atravessa o Concelho no sentido Norte/Sul. A Ribeira de Pera é alimentada por um conjunto vasto de pequenas linhas de água, de entre as quais se destacam as Ribeiras de Gestosa e da Fonte da Telha. Aproveitando a excelente qualidade da água da Ribeira de Pera, na localidade do Bolo encontramos a Praia Fluvial do Poço Corga e na Vila de Castanheira de Pera, a Praia Fluvial das Rocas.
