Golegã is a picturesque village in the interior of Portugal, located by the Tagus River and the Almonda River and known mainly due to the National Horse Fair that takes place every year in November. Its municipality consists of 3 parishes: Azinhaga, Pombalinho, Golegã.
However what most people are unaware of is that the occupation of these lands dates back to prehistory, being occupied since then by various peoples, namely Roman, Arab and Celtic.
The Arab people were the ones who left the most brands since houses with interior courtyards, orange culture, irrigation system, even olive oil production, and these were just a few of them.
Since the beginning of the nation, Golegã has been closely linked to the treatment and breeding of horses, and initially its name was Vila Galega, but there was a shelter operated by a Galega woman where the mounts were exchanged and treated.
On April 25, 1520, D. Manuel I granted a foral to the small village and in 1534 the village was elevated by D. João III.
With the growth of the population and the increase of the horse trade, the Horse Fair was created in 1571 in order to promote the creation of the Lusitano horse and the trade of the same.
In 1871, the wealthy farmer Carlos Relvas had the 'Chalet' built, whose goal was to be a laboratory and photography studio.
The municipality of Golegã, more particularly the parish of Azinhaga, was also known as the birthplace of the illustrious writer and Nobel Prize winner of Literature, José Saramago.
